Backpacking

Return to the Outdoor Activity Guide

Due to the shortness of most local trails and since most are through private land, there are no real backpacking opportunities in the 9 county region covered by OAG. Since backpacking is generally a 2-5 day experience, travel of 1-3 hours is not unreasonable. In that context, there are excellent backpacking opportunities in western and central New York, especially the southern tier, and in north-central Pennsylvania. The reader is referred to the sources for backpack trail descriptions listed in the table below, which can be ordered by local outdoor stores such as EMS and Tent City.
