Dear fellow 46ers,
In Russell M.L. Carson's Book, Peaks and People
of Adirondacks, he writes, "If Marshall had not called them South Dix and East
Dix in his booklet, in order to identify them, they would still be nameless
mountains." This left open the possibility of giving them, "Distinctive titles
when the right occasion comes, without violation of old established names."
The Grace Peak Committee believes such an occasion is here now. We are now
working on a proposal to rename East Dix for Grace
Hudowalski #9, our tireless matriarch of the 46ers. As part of the
required USGS proposal to achieve this, we must:
- Be sure to include consultation with local historians, including town and
county government historians. And be sure to include letters of support or
comment from these, as well as local governmental officials, businesses, and
residents.
- To justify adoption of the name by the Board, the person or family being
honored should have been directly associated with the feature being named or
have made a significant contribution to the area of the feature or the State in
which it is located. Experience shows that local citizens and other name users
often resent and even resist using names that commemorate people.

It took very little thought for us to agree that we should turn to the very
people that Grace has touched with her selfless effort. We can think of no-one
more justified to help us with letters of support than you . . . the 46ers.
- We want to know how becoming a 46er changed your life.
- We would like to collect copies of correspondence letters that Grace sent
to you. (Please do not forward them if you feel they are too personal)
- Tell us what the mountain experience means to you.
- Tell us your trial stories that involve Grace or any of the original
cast.
