Weekly
Paddles

[Paddle] Weekly Paddles
Monday mornings: This group was started by Rebecca Ledwin and she has had a number of people join her in paddling many of the local waterways in relaxed paddling. Peg Jacobs and Pat Powers have scheduled a number of paddles for the months of May and June. This schedule may be expanded at a later date so keep checking the web site for updates. All outings will begin at 10:00 am and last approximately 2 hours. These paddles are usually from May thru September. Please contact the trip leader if you are planning on attending any of these paddles; this way any last minute updates or cancellations can be communicated correctly to all. Trips will occur unless the weather is so bad and/or water conditions are unsafe. Last minute people are always welcome as well! Bring your boat and equipment; you must wear your PFD.
Contact Pat Power or 315-597-6083. or Peg Jacobs at or 585-335-8460 for directions.
Tuesday evening at the beach: This group is for intermediate to advanced kayaking as we paddle in the varying conditions of Lake Ontario. Mark Rakestraw led these paddles this past year and we usually start in May and paddle into November depending on conditions and the paddlers abilites. We have also had some practice nights where we practice safety issues related to kayaking. These paddles usually last from two to three hours.
Thursday night paddles: This group is paddling on many different waterways in the area and has had a number of different trip leaders but mostly Peg Warrick, Bob Comstock, Steve Tryon and Charlie Helman. These paddles are designed for just about any level of kayaking or canoeing. These paddles typical last two to three hours depending on sunlight, water conditions and paddlers abilities. These paddles usually start in May and go into October.
For information it is best to check the web site or contact Charlie Helman at 585-266-0424 or ;.

[Paddle] Canoe Skills Development Workshop
Each Tuesday evening in May at 7:00 PM we will be doing a canoe skills development workshop. The workshop will be open to both solo and tandem canoeists. We will meet at Round Pond in Mendon Ponds Park. The workshops will be led by Marc Ornstein, an ACA certified instructor. Marc holds the Silver medal in the ACA sanctioned national Interpretive Freestyle Canoeing competition. He also operates Dogpaddle Canoe Works where he builds custom canoe paddles and cedar strip canoes.
The workshop will be open to all levels of canoeists from beginner to advanced. You might call this "Obedience Lessons For Your Canoe". The workshops will begin with a review of the basics and will progress toward the beginning of Freestyle, which is the "Art of Precision Boat Control".
Each participant will be required to bring a canoe (only one required per pair of paddlers if paddling tandem), PFD, paddle, clothing appropriate for the weather and footwear that can get wet. A kneeling pad is also recommended. You should also bring a change of dry clothes. If you wish to paddle tandem, please arrange for your own partner and boat. Please note that PFDs will be worn at all times.
Please contact Marc Ornstein by April 29th if you plan to attend, or if you have any questions. He may be reached by email at . or by phone at 582-1153.

[Paddle] Red Creek from Genesee Valley Waterways Center - Update
Meet at 6:15 at the Genesee Valley Waterways Center (behind the ice rink and pool in Genesee Valley Park). 6:30 leave the dock, so lets be there by 6:15. This is an interesting paddle that drys up some years by mid-summer so it is a good way to start the year. It is fine for beginners as the current in the creek is very slow and the only obstacles are possible downed trees that will make us head back to the river together.

[Paddle] Black Creek from Ballantyne Road - Update
Black Creek from the public launch off Ballantyne Road near the river. 6:30 in the water so lets be there by 6:15. This is another good one early in the year before the bugs come out. [Paddle] Honeoye Creek
We will meet at the take out point at the corner of Route 5 & 20 and Factory Hollow road in Bloomfield. Meet time is 8 am and paddle should be approximately 3 to 4 hours. A car shuttle will be required. This paddle is for either canoe or kayak. There is a class 1-2 rapid near the take out point. Most of the trip is slow, moving water with a soft muddy bottom. The rapid is shallow and rocky. This trip is probably not for the fiberglass or composite type boats. It is recommended to bring extra clothes in a dry bag, sunglasses, sunscreen, a snack, drinking water, PFD mandatory, and shoes that can and most likely will get wet!

[Local] [Away] [Younger] Get Out and Help ADK support National Trails Day
According to the American Hiking Society, which sponsors National Trails Day, the event inspires the public and trail enthusiasts nationwide to seek out their favorite trails to discover, learn about, and celebrate trails while participating in educational exhibits, trail dedications, gear demonstrations, instructional workshops and trail work projects.
So why not join the Trails Committee on Saturday, June 7th at the Veterans Memorial Park in Penfield, from 9 to 12pm, as we help the Penfield Trails Committee and the Parks' Department spruce up the trail extension located behind the Penfield Town Hall? [Click for map (3.2 mb pdf)]
For this year's project, we will help do basic trail maintenance (spread wood chips and rake them out) with equipment provided by the Parks Department. All you need to bring is water, work gloves, hat, sunscreen, and your stamina. For more information on how to join us, contact Mary Norman.
At 12pm, we will head to a local restaurant for lunch. In addition, there will be a hike before or after the project as part of the Saturday Hiking program–check back here as the details for the hike unfold.

On the way back to the campground there is a nice sandy beach for swimming on the west side of Lake Eaton.
The round trip is approximately 8 miles from the campground with a little over 1000 feet in elevation gain. Saturday dinner will be at a local restaurant.
On Sunday, after breakfast and breaking camp, we will drive to near by Buttermilk Falls. Before heading home we will visit the Adriondak Museum in Blue Mountain. A deposit of $11.00 is required. The trip is limited to 12. Some loaner camping equipment is available.
