August 28 | Cayuga - Seneca Canal - Waterloo - Photos by John Atkins
Today we paddled a portion of the Cayuga-Seneca Canal that obviously flows
between these two Finger Lakes. The water was clear and had a nice current.
the weather was spectacular and the company was, too. We launched from a
fairly new boat vendor called Fuzzy Guppies located at the Waterloo Harbor
Campground just west of Route 96 on Route 5&20 in Waterloo.
Participants: Stina, John, Luann, Bill, Marilyn and Charlie.

August 26 | Braddock Bay
Tonight was another adventure with the younger members. We had 16 paddlers
for a wonderful adventure up on of the creeks. Joe from Braddocks Bay
Paddlsports stayed open late for us and rented boats and gear to those who
needed it. Go to see some wildlife......and a couple of boats that were
magnetized.....you know who you are.....
Afterwards we went to the Braddocks Bay Inn for dinner and to celebrate
almost everyone staying dry......Carter had the uncontrolable desire to
practice a wet exit....so he did!

August 24 | Round Pond - Mendon Ponds Park
Tonight Dave Curtis of Hemlock Canoe brought a trailer
full of canoes for a demo night of his wonderful boats. The weather held up
and it was cool but nice with a wonderful sunset. Along with trying out a
number of canoes we saw a beaver, woodpecker, geese.....a scuba
diver....and best of all a member from Buffalo came down early and cooked a
wonderful roast beef for us all as well as supplying us with a wonderful
desert afterwards.
I was the only ADkr.....all other participants were from
Hemlock Canoe.

August 19 | Irondequoit Bay
Tonight we had another paddle with a local paddle shop
and our younger members. 20 of us headed north into the bay with a careful
watch on the weather brewing to the west. With a large group of beginner
paddlers mixed in with a couple of experienced paddlers we headed over to
the eastern shore. All seemed fine until we got near the water ski
plateform....these kind folks proceeded to swamp a canoe with two
"newbees" in it and then helped in the rescue.....after we finished our
in the water rescue manuevers we continued north. It was pretty quite as
far as bird activity....no eagles, no geese....we think they all new there
was a storm brewing! After a while we started seeing lighting to the west
and turned our group around and headed back to the launch. Most of the
boats made it back to the dock before the skies opened up on us and gave a
good soaking. Afterwards a large group of us went over to MacGregors to
celebrate a soggy adventure.

August 16 | Daytrippers at Casey Park, Ontario, NY (Wayne County)
Short and very sweet is how we'd describe our paddle in
the Ore Beds (quarry) of Ontario. It takes an hour round-trip if you have a
headwind. But the solitude, natural beauty (reminiscent of Adk's), and
calm, deep, relatively weed-free water make it worth it. It was a very
pleasant day of paddling and conversation for the 8 of us. After the paddle
a hike around the quarry was offered. 3 of us hiked the loop trail around
the quarry which took about an hour walking leisurely. The foliage
surrounding the quarry will be brilliant this fall. Hope to see you on a
Fall trip there.

August 12 | Red Creek paddle Six of us had a nice paddle from the GV Waterways Center, up the river to the canal and then up Red Creek. We were out about 45 minutes before we ran into the shallow area and headed back.
The trip back was nice until Peg decided to demonstrate what happens if you lean your body weight past the gunnels of a canoe while avoiding an overhanging tree. Luckily it was in one of the deeper and clearer parts of the creek so aside from soggy clothing and a slight delay while I emptied my canoe and got back in, there was no problem.

August 9 | Daytrippers on Conesus Lake - Photos by Peg Jacobs
15 of us set out into the north end of Conesus Lake - and
of course the wind picked up!!! It was a welcomed wind with the heat and
humidity!!! The put in at the fishing access on Pebble Beach Rd is quite
nice and has ample parking. We paddled along the shoreline chatting and
observing all the cottages and boathouses. It's an interesting little
paddle. Some folks crossed the lake and paddled back the other side, a few
of us "more leisurely paddlers" continued back along the shoreline we
were already on. Lovely morning for a paddle!!!!

David, Gail, Marilyn, Cheryl, Peg, Joe, Nadean.

August 8 | Otisco Lake Paddle - Photos by Sally Atkins
Today we paddled the furthest east Fingerlake, Otisco
lake. Although very close to the rich.....Skaneateles Lake the wealth was
not apparent as many cottages were in need of a major makeover.
The weather was nice, we saw some abundant wildlife and had a fun day on
the water.

August 2 | Daytrippers on Canadice Lake
A bit of a work out today for what is supposed to be a
leisurely paddle!!! Quite windy and wavy to start out but the lake did
settle down a bit for the return paddle (of course a little wind behind our
backs would have felt good at that point). Canadice Lake is always a
lovely place to paddle!!! 16 of enjoyed the sunshine and the good
company!!! These paddles are such a wonderful way to begin the week!!!!
Next week we'll be at the north end of Conesus Lake - putting in at Pebble
beach Rd.

August 1 | Keuka Lake -- Branchport
Sometimes you just have to NOT trust the weather report.
Today's report was for rain in the morning and thunderstorms in the
afternoon. This scared away most paddlers but four of us decided to make
the trip to Branchport. The skies were overcast and it even smelled like
rain but as we headed south along the western shoreline it just remained
cloudy. After lunch we went to head east accross the lake to the bluff (The
center of the "Y" of all three forks of the lake. Here we incountered
about five seconds of rain sprinkles. After that the skies cleared and we
had a wonderful clear afternoon that was actually pretty hot!
The four of us spead around the Branchport fork of the lake completing 14.6
miles at a average speed of 3.9 MPH with some moments of over
4.5MPH.....WOW.....I should have posted this as a PTFL paddle.

July 29 | Black Creek-Genesee River
Tonight five of us headed up Black Creek from the Genesee
River. the water level was fine and we were able to get quite far up the
creek. We had abundant wildlife.....and a curious Heron kept circling
around and checking to see if we were going to throw him a fish or
something. Wonderful evening....

July 26 | Daytrippers on Irondequoit Bay
These Monday's are picture perfect!!! Beautiful summer
day to paddle. 21 of us set off into the bay. Since it was such a large
group we "naturally" divided into smaller groups as we paddled along.
There was a bit of a breeze and some nice waves pushing us, both out and
back (why does the wind always change on the return trip??). Mr. Bird and
his party of 5 were blessed with a mink (I'm told "up close and
personal", ) They also say they saw an eagle, we have to take their word
on these!!! (I'm never in the faster group who see the exiting things) A
sea plane was practicing landings and seemed pretty close at times but
really just stirred up more waves for us. We set out with 21 but at some
point met another of our paddlers who put in at another point and joined us
- threw my count all off!!! Anyway - a great day for a great paddle with
super people.
And Thanks Ellen for inviting us all over for treats after.....that's a
nice treat in itself. Next week - Canadice Lake!

July 22 | Irondequoit Creek from Baycreek
Tonight we did another paddle with our younger members
group. Another large group and Baycreek was very accomodating in not only
renting boats but working with some folks that were in the buying mood. The
weather was a little overcast but it was still a great paddle. We were even
treated to a visit by the resident beaver that lives near Baycreek.
Participants: Another large group....18 people.

July 18 | Canandaigua lake - North end
Today nine of us set out for a paddle from Kershaw Park
south into Canandaigua Lake. As we started out we were greeted with strong
winds from the northwest. These winds created whitecaps and some tricky
paddling for our group. We paddled a few miles south before crossing the
lake. After crossing we headed back up to the north towards Squaw Island.
We stopped at the island for lunch. After lunch we got into a practice
session to practice self and assisted rescues. Everyone that participated
enjoyed the exercise and the 80+ degree water temperatures.

July 19 | Daytrippers at Hemlock Lake - Photos by Peg
A lovely paddle! 14 of us set out paddling along the shoreline (slight chance of rain).
An eagle made a graceful appearance for us!!! The sun came out and it was perfect!
A few new paddlers and a few new boats and of course, a few regulars.
We took a break on the shoreline after an hour of paddling, drinks and goodies, then paddled back.
As the last car left the parking area at 12:20 it POURED!!!! Someone in our group lives right - we just seem to have the nice weather!!!
Participants: Judith, Neil, John, George, Pat, Marilee, Ruth, Peg, Carol, Cheryl, Laurel, Jenny, Sandra and "the unknown, unreadable" name!!!

July 15 | Thursday evening on the canal by Spencerport
This evening we had eight paddlers for a journey along
the canal in Spencerport. Usually when we have done this paddle in the past
it has always been paddling to the west to begin and then return with the
sunset behind us......tonight we reversed the trip and paddled to the east
first and then into the sunset on the way back. The weather was excellent
and a good time was had by all.....even the mosquitoes! We did have a
strange sighting.....Peg in a kayak!!!

July 12 | Daytrippers at Fairhaven State Park - Photos by Rebecca
The Daytripper Monday paddle group had a fabulous day on Sterling Creek and at Fairhaven State Park.
The park is a gem. The calm, warm day with a mild breeze was the perfect start to the week.
Several newcomers came to enjoy the paddle. After a leisurely two hour paddle we had a picnic.
It was great to share stories and swap ideas. A wonderful day!

For my first paddle of the summer, it was wonderful to enjoy the beautiful day, calm conditions, and connect with fellow paddling friends. 14 of us put in at the Bay Creek site. With experienced paddlers in the front, we ended up splitting into two groups. The group I paddled with was challenged at Ellison Park by shallow water, many downed trees, and rocks. After a short break, we headed back continuing to enjoy the wildlife and gorgeous day. Many swans, ducks, turtles, great blue heron and other birds were sited. Everyone had a good time.

stuff then they joined up on a paddle up Irondequoit Creek. Great weather
and a very....very....large group of paddlers of all levels from beginner
to advanced.

June 6 | Fairport Canal Days- Rubber Duck Race
Today it was another adventure doing some community
service by assisting with the rubber duck race. We were recruited to help set up
the race course, monitor the ducks during the race and then gather them
after the race. This year the race organizers developed a new goal post and
switched from 2000 ducks to 5000 smaller ducks!
The day started out rainy....but as we launched from Ayrault Road it kept
to a drizzle. It stayed cloudy throughout the afternoon but as I drove home
the sun broke thru for a wonderful finish to the day. Lots of people turned
out for the event and there was even sme big prize money .... $25000 ..... to
the winning number selected.

May 22 | Genesee River from Geneseo to Avon
Photos by John Atkins
After last years cancellation because of heavy rain, this trip
was rescheduled for this past Saturday. We had 17 paddlers in eveything
from 12lb carbon fiber solo canoes to a 60lb wooden sea kayak. A fun day
of paddling was had by all as we paddled the murky waters of the Genesee.
Abundant wildlife on the shores and in the sky was evident thru-out the
trip. After hauling our boats up the steep muddy bank at the Avon take-out
spot some members went to Tom Wahls for Ice-Cream,a nice way to end a
perfect trip.

A beautiful Monday morning!!! What more could we ask
for??? Sixteen of us paddled the little bit of the Genesee River to the Canal
and then up Red Creek. Water levels were high enough to paddle quite a
ways up enjoying lovely flowers, trees, turtles, birds etc. along the way
and the bugs aren't quite at full force yet. At the turn around we rafted
a bit and chowed on cookies and other goodies. All in all, a lovely group
of paddlers on a lovely Monday morning !!! Next week we'll be at Macedon,
paddling the canal and traveling through the locks.....canoes and kayaks
welcome!!!

May 15 | Hemlock Lake
Photos by John Atkins
Today started out like any other paddle adventure as I
headed down towards Hemlock Lake for our joint paddle with the Conservation
group. As I headed south on Route 65 I get a phone call from our co-leader
for the day informing me that he must cancel due to a family emergency. I
thought to myself....ok not a big deal I have paddled around Hemlock dozens
of times......then it hit me.....this was suppose to be a combination
paddle and hike. Well the paddle part is easy.....it is a round lake...what
is the worst I could do.... make people paddle around in a big circle....no
way to get them lost. But the hike part had me worried....I had no clue as
to where dave was planning on taking out or where he was hiking to....so I
could not only get myself lost but everyone else as well. After discussing
this with the group the overwhelming choice was that we would cancel the
hike.....
We had 11 boats with 13 people....2 tandem canoes and 9 kayaks. Since it
was quite windy we headed over to the west shoreline where we felt it might
be a little more protected and headed south. along the way we encountered a
couple of heron and.....a bald eagle.....for me it was the fifth trip of
the year where I have seen at least one eagle.....kind of getting to be
like seagulls....they are everywhere!!!! After paddling the majority of the
way to the south end we found a spot to pull in and have lunch. After lunch
we decided due to the wind that it was best to head back to the boat
launch.....another good choice... since I was one of the people in one of
the tandem canoes. We paddled accross the lake which had developed quite a
few whitecaps/waves due to the wind and then headed north. In the canoe it
seemed like for every forward stroke I took I had to take two directional
correction strokes as well.....definitely a lot harder than paddling my
usually kayak. It seemed like the trip back was three times longer than the
trip south but we finally all made it back to the launch. After loading our
boats a group of us made the trip to Avon and Tom Wahl's for our
traditional end of paddle ice cream. Another fun trip!

May 10 | Daytripper on Honeoye Lake and Inlet
Another lovely Monday!!!! Well, a bit breezy! No, it
was down right windy!!! But a lovely paddle!!! 5 of us enjoyed a tranquil
paddle through the "inlet" watching all kinds of wildlife (geese, swans,
eagle, ducks, beaver dams etc.) and chatting amongst ourselves about the
issues of the day - you know, who brought the brownies and how the wind had
died down, how it doesn't get any better than this etc. etc. etc. Then the
tranquility ended when we came back out into the lake!!!! White caps and
rolling waves!!! We bobbed up and down and worked hard at keeping in the
right direction - this writer being the last to arrive back at home port!!!
(under the careful eye of the other paddlers I will say). A few sore
muscles to report and we all had a bit of water in our boats due to that
wave action but WHAT FUN!!!! Again - a super way to start the week!!!!
Next week we'll be at the Genesee Waterways Center and will paddle through
Red Creek - looking forward to another fun Monday!!!

May 3 | West River/Naples
The morning started with a good heavy rain so our 8
paddlers drove through some nasty weather to get to the lake but, upon
arrival, the lake was calm, the sun came out and it was perfect for a
Monday paddle!!!! What luck we have!!! (and the weather report was very
accurate!!!) We paddled down to the Naples Creek and enjoyed geese, ducks,
heron, turtles and lots of good company!!!! A perfect way to start the
week, we all agree. And we'll do it again next week!!!!

April 17 | Canadice Lake Some paddles I get a huge group and some days I get what
I got today ...... ME!
I know this does not count as a club trip because I need at least three
participants but I will list my report anyway.
I was the only boat on the water and it was quite tranquil. As I paddled
around the lake the uniqueness of Canadice was apparent. It was a windy day
with gusts but along the shoreline none of the wind was noticable .... that
lake was flat. This was due to the high western hills that protect the lake
from such breezes. Because I was alone with now one to talk to I was able
to sneak up on all sorts of wildlife .... ducks, geese, even fish had
panic attacks when the finally figures out I was within a few feet of them.
Throughout the day I overheard and saw the eagles flying overhead ..... which
was great because last year I did not see them at all on three trips on
this lake. Overall a very relaxing experience ..... to bad no one joined me.
Participants: Me .... myself ..... and I .....

Eight paddlers ventured to the Howland Island Wildlife
area just northeast of Montezuma Wildlife Santuary. The water level was not
very high but we managed to paddle around the island without a great deal
of difficulty ..... except for maybe me getting stuck in the mud when I tried
to assist another boat!
We certainly had our share of wildlife .... osprey, eagle, ducks, geese, tree
warbler (or something like that??!!), turtles ... jumping fish and what we
were thinking must have been a fox. THe weather was great and we all had a
fabulous time!!!!

April 4 | Conesus Lake
Today three of us went out on our own easter egg hunt on
Conesus Lake. What a beautiful day. The weather was in the 60's, sunny
skies, slight wind .... absolutely fabulous!!! This was one of the few
paddles I have done on Conesus Lake where we had absolutly no boat
traffic ..... water was flat and very few people where at their cottages.
Another thing special about today is the water was extrememly clear ..... no
growth underwater so visability was pretty much 100% ..... I found myself
looking down in the water for long periods of time as we paddled
along ..... checking out what growth was there and also looking for fish.
Passed over many different types of fish but the best were what I believed
to be Walleye (confirmed by fisherman on the lake). they were around 18 -
24: long and most of them were heading to the south end to spawn .....
We saw a multitute of ducks and geese as well as a red tail. Overall a
wonderful afternoon.

March 27 | Black Creek to Bergen Swamp - Photos by Sally

Click any thumbnail to open a slideshow with additional images.
Pleasant weather conditions with temps in the low to high 40's, ice was
still on the shallower portions of the creek and around the perimeter of the
water. However, the weather was pleasant with sunshine and blue skies providing
the backdrop for an 8 mile 6 hr paddle up Black Creek into the grey leafless
forest of the Bergen Swamp. The trip this year was scheduled three weeks
earlier than the trip last year. Everyone was prepared for the cold and had
all the cold weather gear they could muster up and wear and still paddle.
We
had nine paddlers in two canoes, one tandem kayak, and three solo kayaks. We
saw a couple of great blue herons, ducks, geese, deer, and a weasel. Although
Black Creek was clear of debris, the main channel of the swamp contained a
couple of areas clogged with downed trees and debris. Serge and Charlie came
prepared this year. Each brought an assortment of hand saws in various sizes
to tackle the blockages.
Our trip photographer, Sally, was actively recording
our trip with her camera as John maneuvered their very long tandem kayak
through many very tight tricky spots in the Bergen swamp. With the boats and
gear loaded, the last task on our paddling agenda was, of course, to locate the
nearest ice cream parlor in Churchville and this we did with gusto.
Participants included: Charlie, Tricia, Serge, Stina, John and Sally, Pete, and Nancy.

number of small rapids, many twists and turns, a club photographer (thanks
Sally!) and a really BIG dog that had thoughts of hitching a ride on
Stina's kayak. The weather was perfect for paddling and we all had a
wonderful time.

December 6, 2009 Sunday | Black Creek from Churchville Park Two people from Rochester joined up with seven people
from the Buffalo area on a chilly but sunny day. The temperature only
reached a high of 36 degrees but all of us seamed to dress correctly for
the days paddle. We paddled into a strong wind and current upstream towards
the Bergen swamp. Not much animal life except for some ducks and geese but
this did bring up some interesting conditions. While we paddled along we
kept hearing gunshots ...... we assumed this was from the Bergen Gun Club
which we paddled right pass on our way into the swamp area.
We continued
further along and found a nice downed tree that just about all of us were
able to sit on for our lunch break. All of a sudden two very large
containers of cookies and a monsterous thermos full of hot chocolate
appeared out of no-where!!!! While we sat and ate we continued to hear
gunfire and figured out it was hunters ........ well that was enough for all
of us ..... no one wanted to be mistaken for a duck so we turned around and
headed for home ...... we paddled a total of seven miles .... not bad for a
December day!
Participants: From Rochester ....... Stina and Charlie |

October 25 Sunday | Genesee River - Photos by Dave Murphy and Sally Atkins
Today eight of us ventured out on a beautiful day for a
paddle towards downtown and the lower falls. Along the way we saw lots of
tree color, very little power boat traffic and lots of bird
life ..... herons, red tail hawk, cuarmerants (lousy spelling) and some wild
turkeys trying to have Chris for lunch!
We all paddled up to within view of the lower falls but the water level
was a bit shallow so we were not able to get into the pool by the falls. We
broke for lunch and then our return trip to Charlotte. A wonderful
paddle .......

October 5 | Daytrippers on Canadice Lake
Six of us explored Canadice Lake on a lovely fall
morning. The leaves aren't at peak but they certainly were beautiful.
The clouds came and went along with the sun ..... and I think there were a
few sprinkles in there too. It was just a very pleasant paddle. Upon
returning to our put in we enlisted the help of the automobile club to
retrieve car keys locked in a car - luckily that all worked out well and
folks were on their way home in no time!!! While waiting we all cleaned
out our pockets, cars, and packs to find nourishment to hold us over till
rescue came! Believe me, no one starved and it's amazing what food can be
found!!! If the weather continues we'll be paddling next week again ....

October 4 Sunday | Skaneateles Lake - Photos by Rebecca Ledwin
Today we had ten paddlers make the trip to the beautiful
Skaneateles Lake. This is the first year that I have led the trip to the
south end as all my previous trips have been to the money end on the lake
.... the north end.
The weather cooperated as we had a mixture of clouds and sun throughout
the day. The water can only be described as spectacular .... the clearest of
all the Fingerlakes. We paddled up the southeast side in search of some
fossils I had heard about as well as admiring the high cliffs along the
way. Finally about two miles up we hit the jackpot! We found the fossils
which are tubular and according to the locals date back 380 million years
ago .... give or take a few million!
We continued along, and since the lake shore is pretty much all owned
privately I was concerned about finding a place for lunch. We cam accross a
cottage with hospitable occupants who invited us to share the beach with
them and we were set for lunch!
After lunch we headed accross the lake and our return back to the boat
launch.
A fabulous lake and wonderful trip.

September 7 Monday | Daytrippers on Canadice Lake - Photos by Peg
Another one of those beautiful Monday mornings!!! What
a way to celebrate Labor Day! 22 of us met at the boat launch at Canadice
Lake. After a few introductions, (of course we try hard to know all the
names but this time it was a little difficult), we set out in "smaller
groups" to explore the lake. We gathered at the south end to explore the
"food" folks had brought along then onward along the other side of the
lake and back to the put in. The lake was lovely - perfect for a morning
paddle! I think our fisherman brought in one fish along the way - but it
went back in to the water. A great way to end the "traditional summer"
and begin the fall paddling season!!!

September 3 Thursday | Moonlight Paddle on Irondequoit Creek - Photos by Steve
Nine of us in seven boats had a glorious paddle up
Irondequoit Creek. On a beautifully clear night we started in sunlight but
before too long the sun set and we were guided by an incredibly bright full
moon. Well it was incredibly bright in the wetland area, but paddling by
moonlight in the heavily treed sectons of Ellison park is a bit of a
challenge. We all had fun and did not run aground too many times.
It was a wonderful paddle and I plan on repeating it in 2010 (if I can
wait that long).

August 31 Monday | Daytrippers on Canandaigua Lake - Photos by Peg and Rebecca
It is a given - a beautiful sunny day for a paddle on a Monday.
At the last minute, some of us had the opportunity to join Pat Powers, trip leader,
and other Daytrippers for a relaxing morning on Canandaigua Lake with no boat traffic.
The group paddled to the yacht club to survey damage from the tornado this past weekend.
A kayak was wedged under tree damage. There were crews at work cleaning up all the debris.
I (RL) photographed a house on the water for sale.
I thought perhaps the ADK paddle group might have the resources to acquire it for use of fellow paddlers.
There is a shark fin in one of the pictures - no, sharks don't live in fresh water.
It was great fun.
Many enjoyed a delicious lunch before heading home.
We tried to eat outside, but after being discovered by a swarm of bees, dashed into the cover of the cafe.

August 27 Thursday | Irondequoit Creek Paddle Tonight we had a joint trip with waterways and the
younger members. We arranged with Baycreek to stay open later than normal
and we were able to have boats available for rent to people who needed
them. We ended up with 14 boats & 15 people for a paddle up the creek
towards Ellison Park. After a number of years of discussion the Wier dam at
Tryon park has finally been removed! We paddled through this area and up
to the Browncroft Road bridge before turning around and heading back to
beat darkness. Everyone seemed to have a fun time. Afterwards a number of
the YM went next door to Macgregors for some food ..... and they even invited
the "old folks" although I was the only one to join them!

Wow - another gorgeous Monday morning!!! This is just
the best way to start the week!!!! 14 of us set out to explore the "other
side" of Hemlock lake. We paddled along checking out some new beaver
activity and locating the lodge. It was just as pleasant as could be!!!
Not too hot, not too cool! Half of our group chose to continue on down the
lake while some of returned to the boat launch for out 12:00 departure! A
really great morning.

August 16 Sunday | Canandaigua Lake - South end - Photos by Dave Murphy
What a beautiful day for a paddle! Seven of us did a nice
loop around the southern end of the lake today. Setting out from the DEC
boat launch we headed north along the western shoreline admiring the
weather, water and enormous cottages. The water was mostly flat with some
power boat created ripples every now and then. About noon we decided it was
time for a lunch break so we invaded the Bristol Harbour little boat launch
for a quick break. After lunch we headed accross the lake for the return
paddle down the eastern side and the obligatory visit to the eagle sitting
in the tree at the mouth of the West River. It was hard work getting the
eagle to pose for us and all the other paddlers that had accumulated near
the tree. I had to bribe him with a promise of lots of fish over the next
couple of weeks .....

Another glorious Monday!!!
After horrid rain, thunder and lightening throughout the night the sun came out and the water was perfect!
A few branches in the road on the drive to the lake however!
Seven of us set out for a tour around the lake,
joined by 2 dogs in Ellen's boat
(one decided to take a little swim as it was so hot on the water!!).
It was just a lovely morning on the lake!!!! A great way to start the week!

August 2 Sunday | Lockport - Erie Canal
Today, four of us braved the threating weather in the
early morning and we traveled to the Buffalo area and the Lockport Erie
canal. Once there we met up with the Niagara Frontier Chapter (14 boats)
for their annual trek down the canal and thru two canal locks. The NFC calls
this trip, "The best verticle paddle in New York State". Shortly after
getting to the locks the weather broke and the sun came out, the remainder
of the day was quite pleasant. After passing thru the locks we paddled with
the group for a while before creating a major floatilla as we all tied up
to each other and had a feast of treats that everyone had brought along.
After our snacking and chatting we headed back thru the locks and back to
the boat launch ..... where we then picniced ..... we certainly did not want
for Food!!!! A wonderful day .......

July 30 Thursday | Braddock Bay - Photos by Rebecca Tonight I had two people join me on a last minute
Thursday night paddle. I did not put this paddle up until fairly late on
Tuesday so most of you probably missed it but we had a really nice paddle
up Buttonwood creek. Due to the water levels we were able to get quite far
up the creek. On the return trip we came upon three young people in a
fishing boat and one of them caught a four plus .. pound perch ..... huge
fish ..... Rebecca tried to get a picture of it but i am not sure how the
picture came out. Enjoyable evening.

July 27 Monday | Daytrippers at Chimney Bluffs - Photos by Rebecca
It was an exciting paddle today at Chimney Bluffs State Park and East Bay. Amidst some weeds paddling out into East Bay we had sun and clouds as the back drop to a peaceful area filled with flowers, lovely homes and swans. 6 of us ventured out onto Lake Ontario. We enjoyed the vistas of Chimney Bluff State Park. 4 of us paddled to shore while 3 stayed to enjoy the views from the water. The other paddlers had the pleasure of walking along the trail, paddling longer in the bay and fishing. A few of us got wet in the lake.
A wonderful day. A beautiful drive there. For me a perfect paddle to remember a relaxing summer. There were 4 paddlers from the Buffalo ADK that we met and shared a great day on the water.

July 6 Monday | Daytrippers on Irondequoit Bay - Photos by Rebecca
The Daytripper Paddle on Irondequoit Bay today was a lovely trip with many families of geese, swans, cormorants, terns and ducks along the way. We paddled under the bridge admiring the majestic boats and homes that dotted the shore. After paddling along the shore we ventured into a cove. There were eagles flying overhead, nests of cormorants in trees and small birds with homes in the side of the cliff flitting in and out. The group of 15 paddlers rested in the cove enjoying the beauty of the calm day. While in the cove a fellow paddler noticed an injured cormorant. We encouraged him to swim toward shore. The wind and waves picked up as we paddled toward the launch site. The temperature started to drop and dark clouds began to appear. Once again our group had an excellent demonstration of getting back into an overturned boat and pumping out the water. Thanks Neil for another great assist.
It started to rain just as we were walking into Bill Greys after another wonderful Monday paddle. Many in the group stayed to enjoy ice cream, lunch and stories. Thanks to one of our paddlers for sharing her buy one, get one free ice cream coupon. The "trip leader" was treated to free ice cream - too much to eat alone. With group support, we downed delicious vanilla and chocolate almond ice cream.

Today after moving the put in point back to the north
end of the lake, five of us paddled down to the south end of Long Pond and
into the creek. we then headed under the parkway and towards Flynn Road

back up to the north end. Before taking out we all went for a short visit
to Lake Ontario .....

June 29 Monday | Daytrippers on Canandaiqua Lake
The Daytripper Monday paddle on June 29, 2009 was another beautiful day on the
water. We had 18 paddlers. As we set off, we got to practice how to get back
into a kayak when over turned. It was a gorgeous day. Our group paddled down
to a small island, into a beautiful waterway, and then into one of the inlets.
We all enjoyed ice cream after the paddle. I did have a picture of our group
enjoying ice cream. My camera, however, must have run out of memory. I know
what that is like. To see more details about our trip, I will send the link to
our special guest, Jen, from the Democrat and Chronicle who traveled in Pat

June 28, 2009 Sunday | Conesus Lake - Photos by Bill Lawton
Well just like Gilligans Island six of us set out on our
six hour tour in what seemed like a typical sunny Sunday morning. With
clear skies and a slight wind from the south causing some mild chop on the
lake it seemed like conditions were perfect. After a 2.5 hour paddle we
stopped down at the south end for a lunch break.
After lunch we headed out into cloudy skies and after a short time it
started raining lightly .... then heavier ..... then really hard .... and the
wind picked up. The next thing we new we were surfing in whitecaps and
poor visability. I was half expecting to find ourselves on a uncharted
island ..... with no Gilligan, skipper, Maryanne, Ginger or the
Howells ....... we did have a professor and a retired doctor with us
though ......
Fortunately we all returned to our starting point, upright although
extremely soggy .......

June 22, 2009 Monday | Canadice Lake
After such a rainy weekend this was just a beautiful
Monday!!! A bit windy and quite wavey but very very nice!!!! 14 of us
paddled to the south end of the lake and back, staying along the shoreline
due to the waves and wind. We rafted up for some cookies (thanks Linda)
and chat before returning to the boat launch, paddling against the wind.
It was just a lovely way to start the week!!!!

Another glorious Monday Morning!!! How can we be so
lucky!!! The channel is cleared and we were able to paddle quite a ways
down this morning. Lots of flowers, fern, birds, butterflies along the
way. We did not get to the end; we turned around after an hour of
paddling as the water was narrowing considerably. The nine of us enjoyed
the leisurely paddle.

June 7 | Fairport Canal Days- Rubber Duck Race
A wonderful afternoon on the canal. Two of us assisted the Birdcor group with
their annual rubber duck race. Jim and I had a great time helping in the

June 6 | Red Creek paddle - Photos by Sherry
What a beautiful paddle. The weather was warm and sunny with just enough
breeze to keep the bugs away. Three ADK paddlers, Chris, Linda, and Sherry
started out from the Genesee Waterways Center into the Genesee River, rounding
the curve into the Erie Canal and then a right turn into Red Creek.
Along the way we watched as a heron plucked a big fish from the water and
then swallowed it whole!
Red Creek starts out rather wide and then gradually narrows. It is hard to
say how far down we paddled, as the lush foliage and trees make it hard to know
exactly where you are. We must've been pretty close to Jefferson Road. Along
the way we enjoyed the scenery and good conversation.

Another gorgeous Monday morning!!!
As we put our boats in the water we were treated to a display of fighter jets overhead -
perhaps from the weekend air show? Loud but fun to watch!!!
Then off down the river to the canal and on to the creek.
The water was high enough that we were able to paddle about an hour down the creek
enjoying lots of flowers, birds and a few strainers along the way.
It was a lovely paddle!!

May 30 | Oak Orchard River
The day of our paddle started out grey and gloomy
as 10 paddlers met at the put-in on Slade Rd just north of Medina. After
a quick car schuttle to the take-out just north of Rt. 104 we headed back
to the start point for our paddle. The water was running pretty fast
after a week of rain as everybody slid into there boats for the start of
our journey.
After about a half an hour of paddling we encountered the one and
only obstacle of the day. A willow tree had decided to loose its footing
on the bank and spread its lofty branches across the creek. After a quick
examination of the situation a foldable siera saw was produced to prune the
offending branches that blocked our path. Many thanks to our fellow
paddler "Woodey" for his tree surgery duties!
We found a low bank were some locals had set up some plastic
chairs and a bench as a fishing spot, it was decided that it would make a
perfect place to eat our lunch. The sky had cleared at this point, making
the rest of the paddle a sunny event.

May 25 Monday | Day Trippers on Otter Lake - Photos by Megan Meyer and Rebecca Ledwin
The Monday Daytripper paddle May 25th was great! There was no one else on Otter Lake except for two fishing canoes. We paddled around the lake to the channel that connects to Parker Pond. We made it through half the channel. It was further than last year! There is no other access to Parker Pond, so next year we will try even earlier in the season. We had a delightful lunch on a small pier. After lunch part of the group paddled the rest of the lake. There were several great blue herons flying nearby. Some stronger winds and waves helped to propel us back to the launch site. It was a perfect day on the water.

May 18, 2009 Monday | West River/Naples
Another glorious Monday!!! Due to waves and wind on the
lake we opted to put in at the DEC parking lot off Rt. 245 .... that worked
well. The 10 of us paddled down Naples Creek but couldn't get far due to
trees and blockage. Then paddled the river for an hour or so .... some folks
went on down to the SunnyDale bridge, others had a little GPS lesson back
at the parking lot! Heron, ducks, geese, turtles, huge carp, lots of
wildlife!! Lunch at "Poor Richards" on Rt. 21 for many in the group.

May 11, 2009 Monday | Hemlock Lake, south end - Photos by George Mermagen
Monday was a glorious day for a paddle!!! We met at the
boat launch at the south end of Hemlock Lake and paddled through the inlet
to a point where downed trees caused us to turn around. (It was a nice 45
minute paddle to that point). The 7 of us rafted up for some drinks and
brownies then headed back. An eagle made an appearence but only the
fellas saw it - the gals were too busy chatting I believe! By the
time we entered the lake again there were some hefty waves and a bit of
wind making it a little more difficult to paddle back to the put in for
some, especially those smaller boats. But we all found ourselves back on
shore - having had a very nice Monday morning together. Looking forward
to many more terrific Monday paddles.

April 26 | Black Creek from Churchville (East)
A diverse group of 10 paddlers set out from
Churchville heading east on Black Creek. The overcast sky and threat of
rain didnt stop these paddlers from seeing what Black Creek had to offer
that day. Aside from a few shallow spots and only one blowdown it was
smooth sailing (paddling) for the group! At our one portage we decided to
stop and eat lunch before continuing on our way. As the group sat down to
eat lunch on the grassy bank, bounding out of the woods comes a large dog.
Memories of two years ago came flooding back to me where at the same spot I
had been cornered between my kayak on the bank and the creek by two angry
dogs. But this dog was all smiles whith his tail wagging and his only
agenda was to get a few scraps of lunch from the group.
After lunch we continued on our way, the skies cleared and all there
that we could see was blue sky over our heads. With a small chute of
water near the end of the paddle to provide our last bit of entertaiment
for the day everybody left with a smile on their face.

April 18 | Black Creek Paddle - Photos by Sally and John Atkins
Pleasant weather conditions with temps in the 60's along with cloudy skies and some sunshine provided the backdrop for an 8 mile 5 hr paddle up Black Creek into the grey leafless forest of the Bergen Swamp. We had 20 paddlers and a flotilla of 16 boats. Turtles were sunning on nearly every log. Although Black Creek was clear of debris, the main channel of the swamp contained many areas clogged with downed trees and debris. Serge gave all the boaters a reprieve from yet another ‘carry-around' when he sawed and sawed and sawed some more through a large down tree trunk while Charlie helped push the trunk and accompanied pile of debris down stream. Boat bottoms, gear, clothing, and boots became coated in mud and muck as we pulled and carried our boats around strainers full of these large logs and the accompanied debris. As we headed out of the swamp and back toward Black Creek, the stillness of the swamp was interrupted with the echoing of a bird ‘song fest.' Looking up we saw that the trees tops were filled with a profusion of small birds. With the boats and gear loaded, the last task on our paddling agenda was, of course, to locate the nearest ice cream parlor in Churchville.

March 28 | Irondequoit Bay Paddle After launching from our favorite
kayak launch site on the North end of the bay near Sea Breeeze we headed
south to the bay bridge. Since the water is still quite cold everybody
had on their dry-suits or dry-tops. Charlies red face attested to the fact
that he had a water-tight seal at his neck since getting the latex gaskets
replaced on his dry suit.
The bay was ours except for several small
fishing boats trying their luck. After a pit stop at Bay Creek
paddlesports we headed down the east side of the bay on the return leg. By
this point everybody was getting back into their paddling groove after a
winter hiatis. The wheather started out clear with blue skies and ended
the same for our first paddle of the season.

2009 Genesee Valley ADK Winter Loj Trip
By Dave Harrison
Combine a congenial group of outdoor enthusiasts with breathtaking High
Peaks scenery and excellent snow cover, and you have the ingredients for a
terrific Adirondack experience, and that's just what 38 ADKers enjoyed over a
four day period on our Chapter's annual trip to the historic ADK Loj. Located
on a square mile of ADK-owned land about five miles outside Lake Placid, the
ADK Loj overlooks Heart Lake and offers a view of mountains and forests that
ADK members like this writer daydream about all year long. GVC booked the
entire Loj, and on Thursday Feb. 19th people began arriving early in
afternoon. Before dinner, we gathered for refreshments in front of a large
stone fireplace in the great room – a high-ceilinged room filled with rustic
Adirondack furniture, books, and pictures of Adirondack scenery. Although many
members of the group were Loj trip "regulars," there were also 11
first-timers this year.

October 26 | Irondequoit Creek Today we had a short, less than two hour paddle on
Irondequoit Creek with the younger memebers. All two of them! One person
paddled in a kayak for the first time ever and it was interesting watching
her go from a "nervous nelly" to listening to her sing and smile from ear
to ear as she paddled along. The three of us explored all the different
tributaries between the wier and Baycreek. Not much in the way of animal
life although we did see a couple of heron and a red tail hawk.

October 19 | Canandaigua Lake-West River-Naples Creek
Well eight brave people got up pretty early for a Sunday
morning and headed south to Naples today. As we arrived at the boat launch,
Deni informed us that it was 25 degrees! Brrrr. Seven kayaks and one canoe
headed over to the West River and we headed up to the old railroad bridge
before heading back.
As we came back to the intersection with Naples Creek
we decided to detour and see how far we were able to go up the creek. To
our surprise someone has been maintaning the creek and we were able to go
way up the creek past Monica's pies and almost to the Naples Creek
fishing access point on Route 21. Whoever has been this a big thankyou
from all of us.
When we reurned to the lake for the return paddle to the
boat launch a few of us took time to admire the rather large eagle perched
on top of a tree just as we came out of the river access into the lake.
Along with the eagle we sighted a red tail hawk, heron, canada geece
and a assortment of ducks. On top of this we still had some pretty amazing
colors in the trees. Over all a good time was had by all .....

Another beautiful Monday!!! The sun tried to shine at times, the colors were spectacular(especially when the sun did shine) and the wind reminded us that it was there each time we paddled across the lake!!!! September 28 Sunday | Chimney Bluffs to Sodus Bay
The morning of the trip started out grey and misty with a drizzle of rain
coming down. Three paddlers started out from East Bay under a grey but
dry sky heading for the channel that runs into the lake. Upon reaching
the channel we found it had been silted over by small stones and sand so
we did a quick carry to the lake. The lake had 1 to 2 foot waves that made
for a fast and wet launch. The glacial drumlins at Chimney Bluffs were a
odd sight since I have never seen them from the lake perspective before.
Since it was still early we decided to push on to Sodus Bay for for lunch,
after coming around the pier at Sodus we headed for the beach to land and
eat lunch. The waves had picked up some and I decided it might be fun to
surf on some as they broke towards the beach. After riding a wave and
picking up some speed my boat broached and I went over about 200 yards
from shore.
With the help of Charlie and Stina I was out of the water and
back in my boat in about 10 minutes with an assisted rescue. I learned a
valuble lesson about paddling on a large body of water ...... ALWAYS ...
ALWAYS ... 1). paddle in groups of three 2).learn self and assisted
rescue skills 3). carry a bilge pump 4). carry a change of clothes in a
dry bag in a stern or bow bulkhead compartment. What could have turned
into deadly situation was instead a wet, cold and quick dip into Lake
Ontario having been prepared for the unexpected. After I changed clothes,
we ate lunch and then got back in to our boats for an uneventfull paddle
back to the put-in on East Bay.
With the exception of me going over it
was a fun trip, Thank you Charlie and Stina for helping me back into my
boat after my unexpected dip into the lake.

September 13 Saturday | Conesus Lake-PTFL
Three of us set out from the south end of Conesus Lake
on a overcast morning. It turned out to be another classic Charlie paddle
as we kept extending our original distance every time we got to another

had paddled about 3/4 of the lake. The weather held up as it only
sprinkled for a little while near the end of our adventure.

colors were beginning to appear, and of course, were just gorgeous!! We

The West River and Naples Creek proved to be just as
lovely a paddle as ever!! Four of us set out for a 3 hour paddle through
the fall-like scenery. It's amazing how early the leaves turn down
in that area!!! Already we were admiring red and yellow trees, very
contrasting to the bright green water in places! Lots of turtles,
heron, and swamp life!!! The Naples Creek is blocked after about a 1/3
mile with trees down but the paddle that far is lovely. After paddling we
all made a stop and Monika's Pies and I suspect most of us had some sort
of pie for supper - what a treat!!! Next week (Monday) we'll be paddling

August 16 Saturday | Tour de Genesee - Photos by Karen Pakulski
Eight paddlers had a very enjoyable paddle down the Genesee
River from Avon to Black Creek at Ballantyne Road. We met at the take-out
area on Black Creek at the public boat launch were we consolidated paddlers
and boats before heading down to the put-in on Rts 5 and 20 just outside
Avon. After a slippery launch off a steep muddy bank of the river we were
on our way. With the help of a steady current we made very good time as
the river meandered east to west in large arcs almost ox-bowing on itself
in one spot.
We stopped for lunch at Rt 251 just outside Scottsville before setting
off again on our adventure. With the exception of two kayakers and several
small moterized fishing boats there was not much traffic on the river. The
mileage for the trip was 21.5 miles according to Bill Lawton's GPS, very
close to my estimate from the maps that I had used to plan the trip. An
outstanding time was had by all on a weather perfect day. I am already
planning next years Tour De Genesee, Geneseo to Avon since this leg was so
enjoyable.

August 14 Thursday | Genesee from GVWC
Four of us enjoyed a gorgeous evening down the Genesee
to Corn Hill. It was so nice we stayed out until dusk. We know the full
moon was gorgeous behind that cloud, we just couldn't prove it by seeing
it.

August 11 Monday | Daytrippers on the Canal - Photos by Rebecca
The threat of rain put a slight damper on the start of the paddle for Monday, August 11.
For those who came, however, it was a very enjoyable time. The sun started shining mid-morning. We paddled into the village of Fairport. We got out near the village at the boat rental station. The manager was very welcoming, allowing us to leave our boats in a safe area while we walked into the village to the Moonlight creamery. We talked about how lovely the village is with so many interesting places to visit while we enjoyed our ice cream treats. We paddled back with the sun overhead taking in the sights of the lovely homes, many ducks and flowers that dot the canal paths.

August 9 Saturday | Sodus Bay Paddle
All week the weather forecast for Saturday, August 09, 2008 was not
encouraging for a paddle on Sodus Bay. We proved the forecasters wrong! The
sky was sunny with big puffy cumulus clouds. We launched at the public boat
launch on Rt. 14 in Sodus Point. Four of us, Ginger, Chris, Charlie, and Sherry
headed out on calm water. We enjoyed seeing the homes along the shore. Not
long into our paddle, we found a narrow winding stream that we just could not
pass up. We followed it for about a half mile before turning back. Heading
back out into the bay, we saw a family of swans with their little ones. After
lunch, we paddled north toward islands, the water now becoming choppy from
motorboats and jet skis. This was just a splendid outing that we all enjoyed.

August 4 Monday | Daytrippers on Hemlock Lake - Photos by Rebecca
It was a gorgeous day to be on the water on pristine Hemlock Lake. It was a
picture perfect day. We had several new paddlers joining us for this trip.
Aline took the day off to do something special as part of her birthday
celebration. I did wonder, however, "What happened to Norm?" Well, Norm, as
it turned out, put in at the south end of the lake while the rest of us
launched at the north end. He was kind enough to meet us as we all returned to
assist with loading boats and join the group for a picnic at Hemlock Lake State
Park. Everyone shared food. The chocolate covered nuts in a roasted garlic
jar were a special treat. A truly lovely morning!

July 21 Monday | Daytrippers on West River Marsh - Photos by Rebecca
The Daytripper paddle to West River Marsh on the south end of Canandaigua Lake was absolutely lovely. On the way out we enjoyed many great blue herons, one that seemed to lead the way as we paddled down the river. Several paddlers saw an eagle. We paddled to the old railroad tressel stopping to eat lunch. On the return trip we paddled under an old bridge following a small inlet that looped around the river. It was a leisurely morning amidst the Bristol Hills and beautiful Canandaigua Lake.

July 27 Sunday | Keuka West Branch
Photos by John Atkins
Eight paddlers started out from the public boat launch on
Kueka St. in the center of Penn Yan. After a leisureley paddle down the
Kueka Lake outlet to the lake we formed into two groups of four. Going
down the east side of the lake the faster group broke off and headed
around 7.3 miles down the lake with second group doing slightly less.
After crossing over to the west side both groups met up at Kueka college
and had a lovely lunch on the colleges lake-side beach. A few
particapants even went for a swim from the beach before eating lunch.
After our lunch break we continued down the west side keeping an eye out
for the increasing nuumber of ski boats and jet skis that were careening
across the lake. We explored the outlet from the lake until the spillway
terminated our adventure.
After loading our boats back onto our vehicles we had an ice cream stop at
Seneca Farms Dairy on Rt. 54, its funny how we always know were the nearest
ice cream stand is after all of our paddles.

July 21 Monday | Daytrippers on Irondequoit Creek - Photos by Rebecca
Clouds, sun, mild currents and an array of wild flowers, families of
ducks, geese and swans, marked the morning paddle today. We paddled from the
dock across from Baycreek to Ellison Park. The cattails are over 10 feet high.
A soft breeze, good water level, and gently flowing current contributed to a
relaxed and pleasureable paddle, especially going back with the current. The
group stopped briefly at Ellison Park to stretch, snack and share in stories
about the history of the park from captain of the black pearl canoe, Dennis,
member of the Penfield trails group.
As we approached the half-way point
heading back, some dark clouds and thunder loomed overhead. We picked up the
pace trying to avoid being caught in any down pours. Well ... we were in the
home stretch when the clouds opened and we were drenched. Seeking cover under
the overpass, we found a safe spot to wait until the rain subsided. Everyone
got wet, but our spirits were not dampened - in fact, it was fun. A few of us
went to Abbots for an ice cream treat before heading home to dry out. Another
great start to the week.

July 19 Saturday | Honeoye Lake PTFL - Photos by Sue Green
Two paddles to choose from, a PTFL and a fun paddle.
Five paddlers took the challenge to paddle the 9.2 miles around Honeoye
Lake. All paddlers left from Sandy Bottom Park at the North End of the
lake. A very warm day with a light breeze kept the lake calm. Those on
the fun paddle kept to the West side of the lake and enjoyed the sights
with a slower pace. We had the best lunch stop with the great view from
the deck while we waited for the PTFL group to join us. We all finished
the last mile together. Two people did their first PTFL -good job!

July 7 Monday | Daytrippers on Sterling Creek - Photos by Rebecca
The Daytrippers explored new territory today, July 14th. Sterling
Creek is a beautiful, meandering waterway teaming with birds, flowers and bass
ending at Fairhaven State Park on Lake Ontario. It was a gorgeous day with a
nice breeze, sunshine and low humidity. Along the way we paddled under scenic
bridges, saw many birds, including king fishers and blue heron, and turtles
basking on logs. Two parent swans were swimming gracefully with several
younglings as we paddled by.
At the state park we ate lunch overlooking the
beach and got wet in the lake. I can't say we swam but we had a good time
walking on the sandy beach that stretched out into the lake for quite a ways.
On the return paddle we took a slight detour. The big tree in the attached
pictures became an important landmark.
A less than graceful exit ended a most
enjoyable day (we won't say who slipped). We will definitely do this paddle
again with a few modifications. It was so much fun.! Thanks to our elite
group of adventurous paddlers!

July 10 Thursday | Erie Canal in Spencerport Thirteen kayaks and one canoe enjoyed two hours on this
beautiful section of the canal. There were enough clouds to keep the
setting sun from blinding us and the mosquitoes were not out when we
returned. Can't ask for a better evening.

July 7 Monday | Daytrippers on Irondequoit Bay - Photos by Rebecca
The Daytripper group enjoyed a beautiful paddle on Irondeqoit Bay Monday
morning. A mild breeze, calm water and a sunny day contributed to a peaceful
and enjoyable morning. We paddled from the boat launch off Irondeqoit Park
past the bridge exploring a small cove along the way. We saw several great
blue herons, swallows that live in the side of the bank, swans, ducks, a
cormorant and king fisher. In the cove there is a small house for sale.
Someone could purchase their very own island. A few tire swings dotted the
shoreline.
The group indulged in ice cream cones, sundaes and lunch at Bill Gray's
after a magnificent start to the week.

July 5 Saturday | Erie canal - Fairport to Macedon - Photos by Stina
What a wonderful day for a paddle! Today we had 10 boats
from Rochester meet up with the three paddlers from the Mid-Hudson Chapter
who were paddling in our local waterways for a nice day of paddling. They
had spent Thursday thru Saturday paddling and camping along the canal from
the Black creek put in on the Genesee River before we met up with them in
Fairport. Once we met up we paddled along the canal until we got to Lock
30 in Macedon where a number of paddlers ended their adventure only to
watch as four paddlers continued into the lock and the adventure of going
thru the lock. It was the first time thru for two of the paddlers so it
added to the fun.

July 1 Tuesday | Lake Ontario from Durand Beach - Photos by Sally
The lake was almost like glass except for the occasional
powerboat wake. Blue skies, minimal wind and 80 degree temps. made for a
relaxing evening paddle on the lake. After a 21/2 hour paddle most of the
group headed to Bill Gray's for a well deserved ice cream . . . cookies and
cream with oreo chunks yum, yum. Not a bad way to end an evening paddle.

June 29 Sunday | Erie Canal in Lockport
Today we had a joint paddle with the Niagara Frontier
Chapter on the Erie Canal in Lockport. We had 25 boats enjoy a day of
paddling through two large locks on the canal. It was impressive seeing
that many boats in a lock all to ourselves. We even had time to create a
flotilla for a afternoon snack on the canal . . . as people were pulling out
all sorts of food from their boat hatches.
We were fortunate as the big storm that hit did not start until our ride
back towards Rochester.

well, 1st finisher in a sea kayak and 1st in his age group. Pete Latham and
I were safety boaters all day.

June 24 Tuesday | Lake Ontario from Durand Beach - Photos by Sally
A blue sky with two foot waves and a medium chop greeted nine paddlers in
eight boats. We kicked off the first summer season Tuesday night paddle
with a good turnout of particapants. We paddled west into the wind and
made for the west side of Charlotte Beach. With the wind and the waves at
our backs on the return leg we made double time. Hugging the shore on the
way back we observed varying styles of arhitecture of the beach-side
houses(mansions).
The group decided to hang off shore to watch as
the sun set in the westwern sky, the picture perfect way to end a paddle.

June 22 Sunday | Erie Canal Paddle
This was truly an enjoyable paddle with five ADKers - Marshall, Chris, Pete,
Betsy, and Sherry. We had everything from a short wide kayak to the sleek
eddyline that really caught my eye!!!
We launched from the boat launch off Clover Street at 2:00. The weather
forecast had been threatening but the day turned out perfect for paddling. It
was fun riding the wake from small motorboats up to the Colonial Belle. We
paddled to the other side of Bushnell's Basin and back and along the way
enjoyed good conversation. We saw ducklings following their mother, people
enjoying all kinds of outdoor activities from bicycling, walking, boating,
feeding the ducks, and fishing and caught the wonderful aroma from restaurants
in the Schoen Place area.
All in all, a wonderful day.

June 19 Thursday | Irondequoit Bay Four of us had a great paddle under darkening skies. We
started out with a very leisure paddle up the east side of the bay,
keeping an eye on an eagle. Chris and Dave then went a little faster up
to the bridge and back, while the other Chris and Peg took our time
crossing the bay can checking out the west side on our way back. We were
rained on a bit, but not enough to matter. The bay was very quiet and
ther were a lot of birds out.

June 9 Monday | Red Creek
On a very very hot Monday morning 10 of us set out from the
Genesse Waterways and paddled down Red Creek. It truly was a lovely
paddle and the shade was very welcome. The creek is filling in with a lot
of "green" but still paddlable and quite colorful at this point. on the
return we were met with a large barge at the junction into the canal.
Lots of friendly waves as we waited patiently for it to pass by. We
ended out trip at noon . . . that was enough sun and heat for most of us!!!
Next week we'll be at the south end of Hemlock lake . . . looking forward
to another great paddle with great people!!!

June 8 Sunday | Rubber Duck Race - Fairport
Six people in five boats paddled from the Fairport Crew
dock (nice launch site) into downtown Fairport. After paddling around and
checking out all the activity we put on our volunteer hats and acted as
the guides for the 1000 yellow rubber ducks that were dropped into the
canal. With strong winds from the west we ran into some technical
difficulties but over all had a wonderful day on the canal. I was also
able to leave flyers to promote our EXPO around so hopefully it will
attract some interest for us.

June 5 Thursday | Salmon Creek With threating skies we had 13 paddlers set out for an
adventure on Salmon Creek. with calm waters, some noticable wildlife, lots
of shoreline flowers and good conversation the two hours went by extremely
fast. Mother nature was kind to us as we only had a few sprinkles of
rain . . . after heading for home I relized that most of Greece and
Irondequoit had gotten hit by a thunderstorm.

June 2 Monday | Honeoye Lake and Channel
What a great day to be on the water!!! 10 of us paddled
through the channel at the south end of Honeoye Lake. Lot's of beaver
activity thoughout the area!! And a few very green areas to paddle
through!! It was just lovely!!! We are thinking of lengthening out Monday
paddles to 3 hours - from the current 2. We are just enjoying the time and
finding that we'd like to spend a little more time on the water - in
proportion to the driving time to the water (considering the neverending
upward trend in gas prices!!). So - our paddles will begin at 10:00 and
end at 1:00 unless otherwise noted. Pictures will follow ...

June 1 Sunday | Genesee River from Route 251 Four paddlers started out from the DEC site on RT251 on the
Genesee River on an overcast day. This trip was supposed to be a shuttle
from Rush veterans park down Honeoye Creek to the take-out on the Genesee
River at Rt. 251, but low water on the Creek changed our itinarery. We
paddled about 31/2 miles south on the Genesee and met up with a group of
seven paddlers in canoes and kayaks heading from Avon to the Rt. 251
take-out. We observed many forms of wildlife on the shores and in the
sky, including some young eagles darting around the tree-lined shore.
We had lunch at the outlet of Honeoye Creek to the Genesee under
clearing skies before heading back to the Rt 251 take-out point.
A intresting and satisfing paddle was had by all.

May 27 Tuesday | Durand Beach Paddle Sunny and breezy with light chop, 1-2 foot waves. The
water is still very cold so we hugged the shoreline towards the west. When
we returned to the beach area we spent another 45 minutes or so just going
in out trying to catch waves. Ginger's boat was a bit short and wide for
the lake and she didn't have a skirt. Peter happened to have an extra
that she used and she wound up doing quite well.

May 22 Thursday | Black Creek Paddle Four of us had a beautiful paddle up Black Creek from
Ballantyne Road. We started in a strong wind but once we rounded the

to pass easily.

May 15 Saturday | Black Creek/Genesee River/Erie Canal/Red Creek
The morning started out grey and cold I was hoping rhe
rain would hold off until our paddle was completed. Eight paddlers in
seven boats put-in at the Black Creek boat launch. Before we launched the
Gates Fire Department launched their Fire Rescue Zodiac inflatable for a
training spin on the Genesee. A couple of new faces joined us on our
paddle and a couple that we havn't seen in a while also made their
presence.
Alas the feared rain started to sprinkle as we were halfway
down the Genesee. We headed dowm Red Creek at a leisurly pace and were
stopped about a mile and a half down by shallow water. No sightings of the
resident beavers were to be had must have been hiding from the rain.
We
stopped for lunch across from the Genesee Waterways docks before heading
down the Genesee to the put-in on Black Creek. The weather may have been
grey and cold but the company was bright and sunny.

10 people in 9 boats headed out for our annual trip
around Howland Island. Almost immediately after heading out we witnessed
our first sighting of a young eagle. This turned out to be the theme of
the trip as we either saw a couple of eagles many times or multiple eagles
a few times! In between we enjoyed a paddle with beautiful conditions. By
after noon we had clear sunny skies and perfect temps for paddling. We saw
a number of other birds, enjoyed each others company, had a great paddle
and topped it off with an imprompt-to visit to a local ice cream shop in
Port Byron before the return trip to home.

May 5 Monday | West River - Naples This was the first of the weekly "monday morning paddles"
for folks who enjoy a leisurely flatwater paddle, and that it was!! The
seven participants paddled across the end of Canandaiguq Lake up into
Naples creek ... then back out to the river down to the bridge and back. It
was a perfect day - perfect weather, wonderful company, and even a pair of
eagles to watch on our way out. We plan all our Mondays to be this
wonderful!!!

May 3 Saturday | Hemlock Lake - Photos by Sally
A group of
seven of us started from the northern boat launch and paddled into the sunny/overcast skies along the eastern
shoreline. We paddled into a brisk southernly wind that caused whitecaps
on the lake. Upon reaching the southern boat launch we came across a
Pack-paddle-ski group that was going up the inlet. After lunch we headed
accross the lake and the return trip down the western side of the lake. Of
course the wind died down so we could not take advantage of any
surfing ..... we did see some bird life but the eagles were not to be seen.

April 26 Saturday | Black Creek to Bergen Swamp - Photos by Sally
Sunshine, blue skies, and warm temperatures provided the
backdrop for an 8 mile and 4 hr plus paddle up Black Creek into the Bergen
Swamp. Ten of us paddled up the creek
amid the squawking of the nesting geese. The water level was not as high
as in recent years due to the absence of spring rains. Turtles were
sunning on nearly every log and swarms of flying insects buzzed around our
heads and boats as Charlie and Pete pulled and pushed our boats over and
around several piles of downed trees and branch debris. Distant thunder
sounded as we were continuing our trek further into the swamp. Needless
to say, we paddled back to our cars in half the time it took us to get to
where we heard the first sound of thunder. The winds, thunder,
lightening, and golf ball sized hail held off until we were safely back
home.
